For a reminder heres our bathroom right now it is MUCH improved with new paint, some pretty DIY subtle stripes, and new dcor. An option could be to use a chisel and remove some of the wood from the back of the board, right where the clips are (without chipping the front) to make space for the clips and still have the frame sit flush on the mirror.
