I have listed the common needles that are used by quilters and what their intended uses are. I love how they glide through the fabric, but the eyes are small and can be tricky to thread.

If that wasnt tricky enough to remember, a Size 5 of one type of needle doesnt correspond to a Size 5 in another (so a Size 5 Sharp isnt the same size as a Size 5 Quilting). Im having trouble checking out. I know of people who love them for binding and appliqu too. You are so good to us Lisa! I especially love the assorted pack from Clover as it has a bunch of sizes to play with. Hmmmm.

And, packing isnt consistent in labeling: a package of 10 Sharps 5/10 means that youre definitely getting 10 needles, but it could be a mix of five Size 5 and five Size 10 OR it could mean an assortment of needles ranging from Size 5 to 10.

I consider them among my most precious sewing items.
They come in a bunch of different sizes: the lower sizes (2-4) are better for medium/heavy fabrics, the mid range (5-10) are for light/medium fabrics, and the top numbers are best for fine fabrics. I also love to cook when I get the chance. First I will see if I can source them at the local shops that carry your stuff.
I usually like to use a longer Quilting needle (typically a size 7 or 8), but if Ive been hand stitching a lot and am in good hand-quilting shape, Ill use a size 10. You dont have to use them until all of the finish is worn off and they are badly bent or dull. Needles are normally made of high carbon steel and then coated with nickel, gold, Teflon, or platinum. Length & Diameter: I think of these as one and the same because you dont really get to pick and choose: theyre both tied to the size of the needle. They are also long. These are similar to Sharps but are a longer needle. The coatings are put on to prevent the needle from corroding and to make the needle glide through the fabric. When it comes time for hand quilting or piecing, you want a sharp needle to pierce through the tight weave of quilting fabric with minimal amount of fuss or abrasion! Learn more here. Lisa hasnt steered me wrong yet with her tips so Ive ordered these and I dont think Ill be disappointed.
