In fact, the 12th tee represents the highest point in Collier County; a distinction that puts you nearly eye level with the surrounding treetops. Signature Hole: 16th Hole 185 Yard Par 3 This is just a flat out beautiful hole. Respond to above review Next to Siminole, best course in state. The water should not be in play but one is very much aware of it. Some really unique features that include the lions mouth bunker at 17 green, water features that seemingly go to infinity(designers purposely made appearance of lakes to where it is difficult to tell where lakes begin or end), and the elevation change that was created to come into play on 7 of the holes (a rarity for the area). MIAMI, FL | Enjoy 1 nights' accommodations in a Deluxe Guest Room at Trump National Doral and 1 rounds of golf at Red Tiger, Golden Palm, Silver Fox or Blue Monster. This course is completely man made and may be one of the seven wonders of the golf world- taking a piece of land with only 6 inches in elevation changes and building a course with 63 feet of elevation changes. Played July 2022. Favor the right with your tee shot. This might just be the best golf course in Florida. The earth certainly moved at Calusa Pines where numerous sand and waste bunkers connect the playing surfaces to the water hazards in a surprisingly natural manner. With membership numbers set below 300 and a joining fee of around $150,000 Calusa Pines is a high-end facility so get networking and perhaps one day youll be fortunate enough to sample the clubs slippery TifEagle greens. The large elevation drop to the fairway magnifies your yardage and any mistakes in accuracy, so it is critical to get safely off the box to start. After punching in the secret code on the security box that grants you entry (I'm not telling the code) you see the wrought iron black gates down the private road open slowly enough to allow anticipation to build as you approach (I felt like Charlie in the Willy Wonka movie holding the golden ticket). It is a very fair course off the tee, so you can hit driver or fairway wood off every tee without a lot of stress. If I lived in southwest Florida, this is the club I'd want to belong to and play regularly. The staff is fantastic and friendly. Ranked inside the top 10, 2005. 1 person found this review helpful Cell phones are prohibited and walking with a caddie is encouraged; two elements that help you enjoy four hours on the course as much as anything. The driving range is located on the opposite side of the road from the rest of the course and represents one of the few pla, 16th Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (185 Yard Par 3), 3rd Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (155 Yard Par 3), 9th Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (459 Yard Par 4), 18th Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (512 Yard Par 5), 8th Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (291 Yard Par 4), 12th Hole at Calusa Pines Golf Club (468 Yard Par 4), See additional photos of Calusa Pines Golf Club. Once inside it is absolutely a stunning place that words just won't do justice, but I'll make the effort to paint a picture. Excellent golf course. Youll need to befriend a member to get a game here on this intensely private Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed layout but persevere because this pine-sheltered course is dynamite. Routing the course towards this large sand dune is a work of art and elevates this pristinely maintained course among best in the country. Moreover, Calusa Pines has far more interesting and varied greens and surrounds than the TPC course. The sprawling clubhouse provides an impressive backdrop across the rear of the green and a great vantage point to watch players try and reach this green in two. They responded by piling up fill from ponds to form ridge lines up to 58 feet, then planted them with mature oaks, pines and sabal palms. Be forewarned this is a tough green. Those elevations changes are totally manufactured through the development process of the course but you would never know it given the natural look and flow of the course and property.
Best Par 4: 9th Hole 459 Yards The closing hole of the front nine features a lake up the entire left side that crosses through the fairway 50 yards in front of the green. Respond to above review
If you can get there get the gator gumbo soup. This course underwent a true transformation. The fifth hole is a substantial dogleg right with mounds down the right inside the tree line and sand down the entire right side. Thanks! They are elevated with run offs on most sides. The Takeaway: Calusa Pines features elevation changes you generally don't find in Florida, elite level conditioning, and enough sand to make the Sahara Desert jealous. The 16th is my favorite hole, a down hill par 3 with ample opportunities to put your ball in a water hazard. Eight is a short par 4 and visually one of the best-looking holes from the tee on the course with a hill down the right and sand down all of the left. However, hitting from this bunker is not much of an issue. What to Expect: Calusa Pines is the flagship design of Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry; the duo that is also largely responsible for the design of 2017 U.S. Open host site Erin Hills. See other reviews from Vincent Zilnicki. Copyright 2022 GolfPass. The greens are tough to hit, the aprons around the greens are undulating / punishing and the shaping on the putting surfaces is a massive test. Was this review helpful? The 7th is technically a par 3 and a half hole, playing 250 yards, but it is a beauty. Respond to above review Recent removal of overgrown vegetation between holes has returned beautiful long-range views to the course and made it more playable. Absolute must play if you get a chance! I like how this hole distorts the type of shot one is required to hit. Any shot to get on take it. Property was completely flat, the 16th tee is now the highest in the county. Have played sawgrass, all streamsongs, bears, etc, and calusa is the winner by a decent spread.
There is a large swale to the left of the green and behind and the green has a spine in the middle. From a conditioning standpoint the course could host a PGA Tour event on a moments notice which may account for why Steve Stricker is a member at the club. See other reviews from John Sabino. The par 3 11th also has a predominantly left list to its green. PV is a mean golf course with trouble 5 feet off of every fairway so this is a bit different, but no picnic to say the least. It has a false front as well. Greens were 12-13. GOLF DIGEST MAY EARN A PORTION OF SALES FROM PRODUCTS THAT ARE PURCHASED THROUGH OUR SITE AS PART OF OUR AFFILIATE PARTNERSHIPS WITH RETAILERS. See other reviews from Jonathan Wilson. 2021-'22:No. The par 3 3rd does not look too intimidating on the card, but with a small green with deep bunkers left, it still has teeth. Our caddies (seasonal, but spends the summer at friars head) continued to call the greens slow and they had to be rolling at a 12+. The course is exceptional from holes # 8 - 18. 0 people found this review helpful The condition of the course was as good as you'll see for Florida with one exception: its really cool to have massive waste bunkering but its tough to figure out exactly what materials the bunkers should be. One tries to drive as to the left side of the fairway for a slightly better view of the green and as close as possible to the bunker next to the water on the left to avoid a 200- yard shot into a very long, tiered green with hollows in it. But most of your strokes will be spent on the greens which were running about 12 and had a good bit of slope. Calusa is also an enjoyable course for high handicaps. The 400 plus yard par 4 5th surprised me, as it has large bunkers behind the green. ", Top marks across the board. The Brickyard Golf Club is the most underrated private course in Middle Georgia. Of the Hurzdan/Fry courses I have played, Calusa Pines is the best. Players that get too nifty with their chip from off the green and leave it short will quickly have an opportunity to try again as they'll find their ball right back at their feet. At least half of the holes have water that comes into play and the green complexes make it a true second shot golf course along the lines of Pinehurst #2 while being in a setting reminiscent of Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. If you like eye-candy over architecture, you'll rate this higher than Seminole. Calusa Pines joins the Streamsong courses as having some of the best elevation changes and hole designs in the state of Florida and is unquestionably one of the best courses and clubs in the Sunshine State. The third hole is a favorite, a par 3 of 155/135 with a bail-out area to the right but deep and tall bunkers on the entire left and a fall-off at the back. MIAMI, FL | Enjoy 1 nights' accommodation at The Biltmore Hotel and 1 round of golf at The Biltmore Golf Course. more reviews like this can be found at, I have to say that visitors to Calusa Pines confuse a great CLUB with a great golf course.
A miss to either side will result in one going down a hill or ending up in a bunker on either side. Niall, Thanks for the kind words . The green seems easy but is actually one of the speediest ones on the golf course. Florida courses often get negative reviews for the lack of elevation or interest.Calusa Pines has lots of elevation and keeps your attention the entire round. ", Great play, variety, design, very challenging.very fair but difficult greens to hit in regulationperhaps best in Florida", Special place! Directions: Get here! I was off and on my way to the golf course at 0805. Best in State:Ranked third, 2011-'22. See other reviews from michael nowacki. Tipping out at less than 300 yards, this par four is plenty reachable, however the hole does climb uphill which makes it play longer than the yardage may suggest. Seven is a long par 3 of 250/226/186 to a green sloped back to front and right to left but with many subtle breaks. After turning around the dogleg the fairway climbs slowly but steadily uphill enroute to the green and features a deep bunker fronting the putting surface.
A first-rate experience all around if you're lucky enough to know a member -- this is a very tough get. Its actually set some 60 feet up so perched is perhaps an exaggeration! The Hurdzan/Fry design along with the vision of founder and owner Gary Chensoff have created a top shelf golfing experience. The few memorable holes are the drivable par 4 and the last par 3. Generous off the tee but very challenging on the approaches and fast, firm greens which have severe roll-offs. Although one often sees the water, Calusa Pines does not incorporate water as much with the possible exception of the fourth hole from the back tee requiring a long carry over water, the fourteenth with water behind the green, the par 3 sixteenth hole, and water on the right for the tee shot on seventeen. Very walkable course that is somewhat forgiving off the tee yet very challenging with approach shots and green complexes. Chensoff decided to gamble, instructing Hurdzan-Fry to design the most unique course in south Florida despite a dead flat site. Was this review helpful? MIAMI, FL | Enjoy 2 nights accommodations at JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa and 2 rounds of golf at Turnberry Isle Country Club - Soffer & Miller Courses. I do not think there is one great hole at Calusa Pines, but nearly all of them are good to above average. Solo games of ping pong back and forth across this green is unflattering commonplace. The backside starts out with a tough par 4 with the green pushing everything left. I was told the ridge that hosts the 9th, 12th and 16th tee boxes is the highest point in Collier County. I had two birdie putts roll off the green into the rough. I have not played Seminole or Sawgrass yet, but the variety of holes and the risk/reward opportunities offered by Hurdzdan/Fry make this for a great round of golf. ", Tough, well-conditioned Hurdzan-Fry design in south Florida. It is a nice par 3. See other reviews from Fergal O'Leary, Respond to above review While the length and carry over the marsh area is far from punishing, the steep slopes on either side of the putting surface create a nasty scenario to recover from. Seminole is still on the wish list, but it is going to be extremely difficult to say there is a better golf course in Florida than calusa pines. ORLANDO, FL | Enjoy 2 nights' accommodation at Tuscana Resort Orlando and 3 rounds of golf at Disneys Magnolia Golf Course, Palm Golf Course and Lake Buena Vista Golf Course. Respond to above review It is not a long hole but plays a club longer as it is another elevated green with another large, wide bunker across much of the front. ", Great course that does not have the usual flat Florida topography. I am a member of a club in the area, and I have no probably admitting, Calusa Pines is the #1 course in SW Florida. Play Calusa Pines on a high wind day and every shot is a challenge. USE OF AND/OR REGISTRATION ON ANY PORTION OF THIS SITE CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE OF OURVISITOR AGREEMENT(UPDATED 1/1/20),PRIVACY AND COOKIES NOTICE(UPDATED 1/1/20) ANDCALIFORNIA PRIVACY NOTICE. The green is very quick. The 12th features the best views and tee shot on the course, so enjoy and do everything you can to avoid a bogey! The green is deep enough to hold most approach shots and has numerous subtle breaks. Calusa is blessed with a unique topography, which really rolls in places including a dramatic panoramic downhill par 3. The idyllic setting hosts a strong variety of hole designs, shapes, and directions so as to ensure a unique experience each time around. Respond to above review Was this review helpful? It was almost impossible to play golf but it was still a real treat to play. There are holes and characteristics of both courses that might give either one an edge. Calusa Pines should be rated higher. Highest ranking:No. Not sure I could play it every day. The green goes right to the water on the right and is sloped left to right towards the water. Very beautiful course with abundance of sand and water. One can make a birdie or a double bogey here. Was this review helpful? ", Wonderful routing with exceptional landscaping. Sand is prevalent throughout the layout with expansive white bunkering as well as waste areas that are blanketed in pine needles which act as the undergrowth of numerous species of trees and bushes. Unlike other courses in Florida, Calusa Pines has hilly terrain and lacks water on most holes, which in my book are two positives. One must avoid the trees on the right with the drive. This is an under-rated but very good golf hole.
The 18th is a super finishing hole, dog leg left. Great walking course, but note well, the greens are faster than teenage sex. ", More elevation change than most Florida courses. This is among the top 5 courses in the state with a huge demand on accuracy. 2 people found this review helpful I usually dont respond or reply to reviews. A round at Calusa Pines is a special treat. It most certainly is a better than average golf course which features a hill in one corner of the property to set it apart from the rest of Florida south of Ocala. If you like brilliant architecture over eye-candy, Calusa isn't in the ballpark of Seminole. Fifteen is perhaps the best visual hole on the golf course from the tee shot all the way to the green nestled at the bottom of another man-made hill. For big hitters it may be driveable, a Redan green that it is well protected with bunkers and a hellacious pot bunker to the right front. Incredible conditioning. Great clubhouse, fabulous course, conditioning, caddies, practice area, challenge. The course offers a good variety of shot options, varying lengths par 3s, 4s, 5s, and great movement. The bunkers are pretty much gravel. You need to bring your irons to play, as there is a premium placed on hitting greens, since missing them typically means bogey or worse. If one can get a game here, they should jump at the opportunity. The sixth hole is a par 5 of 545/515 requiring one to either lay up short of the bunkers on the right side of this dogleg right or carry them. One has to come in from the center of the fairway because if the tee shot is struck too far left it is a difficult angle requiring a carry over a bunker on the left or one brings the water into consideration. - 2000 Calusa Pines Drive, Naples, Florida 34120 UNITED STATES, Photos: See additional photos of Calusa Pines Golf Club. Because if he thinks. If you do not putt off the green, that is a W. To the course, the first hole is welcoming and two good shots should set up a good round. Wide off the tee but the approach shots are key. I had two approach shots land 12 ft from pin with spin that rolled off green into rough. NAPLES, FL | Enjoy 2 nights' accommodations at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples and 2 rounds of golf at Tiburn Golf Club - Gold Course and Black Course. Respond to above review They haven't missed the mark on anything here. The same for the par 5 second, not too demanding. Was this review helpful? Great layout with caddies available. Seventeen is a lovely par 4 with water down the right but there is ample room to hit the fairway. Calusa Pines sports perhaps the firmest, fastest Bermuda fairways and greens in Florida, rivaled only by the turf at Streamsong. Dana Fry continues to be hands on at this property and I congratulate his long-term efforts. Putts hit on the edge of the cups are not likely to go in due to the green speeds. ", One of the best in Florida. As if the greens were not difficult enough, the fourth hole has one of the trickier ones, a par 4 of 464/409 that one should try to come into the green as straight as possible but avoiding the water down most of the right side but this requires one to carry the water to reach the fairway. I'd love to get that secret code one day. ", Calusa Pines is a top notch, but somewhat exclusive, golf experience that should not be missed if you have the chance. It is a green sloped back to front with a substantial run-off to the right. Respond to above review Easily the top hurdzan design having played Hamilton, Philly militia, shelter harbor (close), and Erin hills. This review whets the appetite like few others. Calusa Pines is often listed behind TPC Sawgrass Stadium as the number three golf course in Florida, the state that has the most golf courses in the USA. Birdie Time: 8th Hole 291 Yard Par 4 The 8th hole is an exciting offering that players should come to licking their chops.
The type of place anyone would want to be a member.". Best course designed by Hurzdan/Fry", It's amazing what you can do with an unlimited budget. The head pro mentioned they lost 750 trees that opened up vistas and sight lines. The course features a lot of raised greens but also lots of short grass, making it playable for almost all levels of golfer. ", Great layout. The final one-shotter at Calusa Pines is the most memorable hole at the course with a green wrapped around the sides and back by water and an elevated tee that offers an inspiring view of the surrounding property. The club itself is really cool. Best Par 5: 18th Hole 512 Yards Calusa Pines features great holes as the closers on each nine with the final hole of the course also providing a good scoring opportunity. The conditions are spectacular and you won't find a more photogenic course in Florida.
Amazing golf course, clubhouse and a friendly staff. Grain has little to no affect on putting even though greens are Bermuda surfaces.
