Her second crime novel, The Guest List, from 2020 sold over 1 million copies and was a No. In terms of the writing, it tries so hard to sound ominous, but it came off as super cheesy to me, which detracted from the atmosphere of the book. Does this book get any better?

Foley gives readers a relatable heroine in Jess, one whose shoes we can step in and whose missteps are as important as her breakthroughs. Meanwhile, in the building's dumbwaiter, Mimi finds a bloodied sharp object wrapped in fabric which she accidentally cuts herself with.

Hes moved to Paris for a fresh start and isnt thrilled when his chaotic sister Jess asks if she can crash with him after leaving her job in London. It gave me the same waves of happiness I get from curling up with a classic Christie.
Foleys first crime novel The Hunting Partywas a Sunday Times bestseller.
When it comes to finding Ben, the neighbors are anything but neighborly. I definitely would have stopped reading it if I hadnt been planning on reviewing it for this site.
And on the 1st floor is a couple with an unhappy marriage, Dominique and Antoine.
On the 4th floor, are two young female roommates, Mimi and Camille.

And lastly, when the plot reveals finally start happening in the last quarter of the book, they werent interesting enough to be worth the tedious lead-up. Given the books complexity and multiple perspectives, this storys more measured pacing felt appropriate to me; readers will find it helpful to have ample time to meet the storys central cast of characters and thoroughly understand the way their lives intersect.
On Friday, the Prologue opens with Ben, a journalist, working on a story in his 3rd floor apartment in Paris when someone unlocks his door and attacks him.

We soon learn that Antoine and Nick are Sophie's stepsons from Jacques's first marriage while Mimi is her daughter. Before we get any farther into this review, I need to say one thing to set appropriate expectations: this book is great in its own right, but its a bit different from Foleys previous suspense novels, and readers will best appreciate this story if they go into it with this in mind. It tries to keep all its secrets so close to its chest so that you have entirely no clue whats going on or why anyone is doing anything for the majority of the book.

Ive always been inspired by film in my writing so knowing that The Paris Apartment will be coming to the big screen is a dream come true.
After picking his locks, she enters, alarm bells.
Book review and synopsis for The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, a sub-par mystery set among a group of residents of a Paris apartment building.
She finds his wallet containing a metal card and contact information for Theo Mendelson, an editor for The Guardian. What an inane book; stupid plot and ridiculous characters. Nope.
The mystery grows once she steps inside.
I dont understand why such underwhelming, mediocre books get so much publicity and attention.
Overall, the Paris Apartment was not great. She explores the building which has an extensive wine cellar and meets the various other residents of the building.
centers around an apartment building where no one is quite who they seem, and everyone has secrets theyre keeping. THE PARIS APARTMENT (unsurprisingly, given its title!)
I felt no such nudge and felt quite comfortable setting the book down without the curiosity or intrigue to pick it up again. Plus, the whole point-of-view of the Concierge has is so cartoonish. The residents of 12, Rue des Amants are an eclectic and mysterious bunch. The constant switch of perspectives gave such a lack to all the characters and the paceI was basically skimming at the end to just finish it.
What a delicious whodunnit claustrophobic mystery takes place in an eerie apartment with its terrifying occupants who are great liars to bury their ugly secrets! Lucy Foley returns with a psychological crime drama set in a Paris experiencing turbulence and riots, and an eerie, shadowy and sinister old apartment building, a wealthy location at which British journalist, Ben Daniels, resides.
Jess recognizes one of the girls as the young woman she waylaid her at the Metro.
She's broke and alone, and she's just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. There are Sophieand Jacques, an older couple who live in the penthouse;Mimiand Camille, two young students occupying the fourth-floor apartment; on the second floor, Nick, a friend and former classmate of Ben's who helped him find the apartment; on the first floor, youngcoupleAntoine andDominque; and the elderlyconcierge, who lives in a small cabin in the courtyard. Her half-brother Ben didnt sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didnt say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris.
What you do with the opportunities life presents to you., I could not explain that I simply wanted someone to love. The story thats provided is barely enough to keep it moving forward.
However, when Jess goes to sleep, someone breaks in and takes the notebook containing the notes. Jess soon meets the various residents of the building.
From returning favorites to new-to-me voices, from twisty psychological thrillers to book within a book-style stories and more, Summer 2022 has some absolutely incredible new crime fiction releases in store for us.

1 Sunday Times bestseller, a New York Times bestseller, a Reeses Book Club pick and has been sold in 30 territories around the world. But from the moment Jess arrives in Paris, things arent as they should be. Alone and increasingly afraid for her brothers wellbeing, Jess sets out on her own investigation into Bens disappearanceand, along the way, discovers herself drawn into a web of conspiracy and danger.
The lingering questions surrounding Bens disappearance coupled with Jess increasing sense of unease are all the bait needed to hook readers, and Foley reels us in with an expert hand, building to a finale that ties together this storys many threads with surgical precision and cinematic entertainment value. Back at the building, Sophie reminisces about how she'd been having an affair with Ben.
Cartographers. In a beautiful old apartment block, deep in the backstreets of Paris, secrets are stirring behind every residents door.
Mystery-thriller novels typically have to strike a delicate balance of providing enough information to keep the story going, explain whats going on and drop some clues while withholding enough details to maintain the mystery and provide a few surprises, usually towards the end.
When Ben recovers, Theo publishes the expos about the club while Jess convinces Sophie to provide monetary payments to the girls at the club so they can disappear (since many of them are undocumented, etc.). Read the first pages of The Paris Apartment. And everyone knows something theyre not telling. phew. Before I knew it, I looked up and it was July, and not only had a bunch of the books on the list already been published, but I realized that I had actually already read all of the books I wanted to include in this list anyway.
Her half-brother Ben didn't sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn't say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. ITS ONE OF US delves into the lies that we tell to keep our relationships togetherlies that can also tear relationships apart. This in no way affects my opinion of the book(s) included in this post. On Sunday, Nick helps Jess report Ben as an official missing person to Commissaire Blanchot from the police.
Only when she shows up to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? Im a huge admirer of Elizabeth Gabler and her work she has produced many of my favorite films and specifically book-to-film adaptations of recent times, so to be working together is an absolute delight and honor, said Foley. The trip was hastily-planned: when we meet her, Jess has just gotten herself in some trouble at the dive bar where she works in England, and her brother Ben - and his Parisian apartment - is her escape plan. I know theyll stay faithful to the essence of the book while giving it a dynamic new life on screen. (The Detailed Plot Summary is also available, below).

The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother's situation, and the more questions she has. While THE PARIS APARTMENT does have much in common with Foleys previous two novels - including a primary focus on a single setting, and a relatively fixed set of characters - this book, in my mind, does not read like the modern spins on the locked room mystery for which Foley has become so popular. now i understand!

It's a club masquerading as a place selling high end wine, but it is actually engaging in sex trafficking and owned by the Meunier family. THE PARIS APARTMENT is a slow-burning story, but its a story that never lacks for entertainment value.
I liked her book The Guest List but this one was so seedy and just made me feel icky after I finished it.
Everyone's a suspect. If you love the game of Clue, Riley Sagers Lock Every Door, and/or Hulus Only Murders in the Building, Lucy Foleys THE PARIS APARTMENT might just be your new favorite book.
