The Super Deluxe Air also gets a new bottom-out bumper thats supposed to be smoother and offer a more cushioned travel stop, along with the new DebonAir+ air spring and both air can options, just like the Deluxe. Also in keeping with the new Charger 3 damper, each click of the the adjusters on a Super Deluxe shock will deliver a perceptible and equivalent difference from the last. The topout bumper has also been revised, to provide a smoother, gentler stop. There are five clicks of HSC via a 3mm hex-key, five clicks of LSC via the side-mounted adjustment nob, and 15 clicks of rebound oriented at the top of the shock on the air systems, and at the bottom of the shaft on the coils. His riding style is "PINNED" and he loves to scope out those seemingly impossible triples. HBO + progressive spring puts coil into play for a lot more bikes without finding bottom too often. Posted in: I know some frames are so bad theyre going to eat shocks regardless but its nice to see companies (DVO is on it too, CaneCreek has made changes to their seal head over the years) putting in an effort to protect their shocks from premature wear (or at least protect themselves from some of the ridiculous warranty claims) caused by design and alignment issues.
Heres why you can trust us. The bottom out bumper is castled for smoother compression and theres an optional hydraulic bottom out tapered needle in the shaft damper that ramps up resistance progressively in the last 20 percent of the stroke. Prior to that, Tyler launched and built multiple sports nutrition brands and consumer goods companies, mostly as an excuse to travel to killer riding locations throughout North America. Just pop in the model of 2023 fork or shock, your bike, and your weight, and itll help you set it up and tune it. These glide rings are not replaceable, only o-rings get replaced in an air can service. How do the new ones stack up, and will the new features and additional adjustability position them as a true premium product? The compression adjustments are approached a little differently to before, and rely heavily on the base tune set up by the manufacturer. Like the new forks, the compression damping circuits completely isolate high and low speed circuits, giving you more refined control over their performance. Flash Review of the new ZEB and Super Deluxe Air, Flash Review 2023 RockShox ZEB and Super Deluxe, New RC2 and RC2T Super Deluxe dampers with adjustable high- and low-speed compression, Super Deluxe Air and Coil now feature optional hydraulic bottom-out, Offsets: 37 mm (27.5), 44 mm (27.5 and 29), MSRP: $1,054 / 1,139 / 1,017 (European prices include VAT), Other features: Ultimate Bushing Package, Pressure-Relief Valves, MSRP: $790 / 588 / 763 (European prices include VAT), MSRP: $1,107 / 1,196 / 1,069 (European prices include VAT), MSRP: $843 / 912 / 813 (European prices include VAT), Travel options: 160, 170, 180, and 190 mm, Offsets: 38 mm (27.5), 44 mm (27.5 and 29), MSRP: $1,159 / 1,253 / 1,119 (European prices include VAT), MSRP: $869 / 968 / 864 (European prices include VAT), MSRP: $399 / 431 / 385 (European prices include VAT), Spring: DebonAir+, Linear or Progressive air can options, Adjustments: Rebound, low-speed compression, threshold (climb switch), Adjustments: Rebound, threshold (climb switch), MSRP: $599 / 648 / 578 (European prices include VAT), Damper: RC2T w/ optional hydraulic bottom-out, Adjustments: Rebound, high-speed compression, low-speed compression, threshold (climb switch), Damper: RC2 w/ optional hydraulic bottom-out, Adjustments: Rebound, high-speed compression, low-speed compression, Damper: RT w/ optional hydraulic bottom-out, Damper: R w/ optional hydraulic bottom-out, MSRP: $549 / 594 / 530 (European prices include VAT), MSRP: $499 / 539 / 482 (European prices include VAT). It works by gradually closing off damping oil flow in the last 20% of travel, making it more progressive to prevent a harsh bottom out. Ultimate - RC2T - Rebound, LSC, HSC, Threshold, Ultimate DH - RC2 - Ultimate minus the lock-out option, Select+ - RT - Rebound & Threshold adjustment. As a much larger then average rider I suspect the rampup provided by the HBO wont be as significant with the high spring rates.
On the air version of the Super Deluxe they've also put a bunch of extra energy into supporting the shaft and keeping crap out. I guess you could say its a more linear process. If you get a bike with one of the lower level shocks on it, you can also upgrade any MY23 Super Deluxe coil spring to the new RC2T reservoir. Theres definitely no way this is going to open or close on its own, and it may not be as easy to give a quick flick open or closed while riding along as the previous version. Both the Super Deluxe Ultimate Air and Coil are available in versions with a climb switch (RC2T damper), or in a DH version (in sizes meant for longer-travel bikes) that forges the option (RC2 damper).
RockShox has also added pressure-relief valves, similar to what Fox has offered for a while now, onto all three of the new forks. The more modest update means that the new Charger 3 damper and DebonAir+ spring can be retrofitted to earlier model-year ZEBs, unlike the Pike and Lyrik. But because you need the back pressure to prevent cavitation, and shocks see much higher pressure than forks (thanks to leverage ratios), you need that tight seal. Rides: Pace RC295, Cotic FlareMax, Specialized Chisel, Vielo V+1 gravel bike, Nicolai FS Enduro, Landescape custom gravel tandem. A more complete rundown of the lineup is below. The two different air cans let you choose (or, more likely, let your bikes manufacturer choose) the best air volume to augment each frames particular kinematics. There's also a bottom out bumper to protect the shock and keep things smooth when a rider is hitting the end.
Tyler Benedict is the Founder of Bikerumor.com. Tasco MTB Apparel - Shirt, Shorts, Gloves and Socks, OneUp's New Dropper Post Remote? On coil shocks, the HBO is adjustable. Photo: RockShox. The Ultimate-series forks also get a new bushing package, with a 53% longer lower bushing, which RockShox says increases overlap and reduces friction by distributing the load over a greater area and helping to mitigate binding when the fork is being heavily loaded.
Buttercups come standard on the Ultimate versions of the Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB, and can be added to lower trims, but only as part of a full DebonAir+ and/or Charger 3 upgrade kit. And even if you are that guy with a suspension diary, then this still makes it way to track your settings.
For the air-sprung Deluxe, youll find a new DebonAir+ design that gives you a lot of tuning options. A sized DU bushing and u-cup seal in the seal head of the coil shocks provide support for the shaft and keep crap out. This is a big day for RockShox who are launching all new forks (Zeb, Lyrik, and Pike) and Super Deluxe air and coil shocks for the 2023 model year. With the DebonAir+ spring there are two different air can options - one called Linear and the other Progressive, with the progressive having a much larger negative air spring. While the new forks use a coil-backed IFP, the shocks stick with a nitrogen-backed IFP. So, designing a fork is more ~straightforward~? Support us! Namely, a large quantity of oil flows through the high speed circuit first and then a much smaller quantity of oil flows through the low speed circuit. From some setups I've ridden, I'd even go as far as to say some riders would be better serviced by not upgrading their Select+ dampers with the Ultimate control unit. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Cheers! Based in North Carolina, Tyler loves finding new travel adventures to share with his family and is always on the lookout for the next shiny new part to make his bikes faster and lighter. Coil Shock, Air Shock, I've also seen full suspension rigs with alignment issues so bad that they unwind shocks, break shafts, load bodies against air cans, load shafts against bodies, and generally eat shocks - no matter what brand shock comes spec. I think this makes a lot of sense. Between Air and Coil, the Super Deluxe shocks share many parts. Thanks for the reply. The big updates for the 2023 Rockshox rear shocks are: Across the range, most of the best new tech sits on the top models, which are also the only ones you can buy as aftermarket upgrades, so well focus on those. If all of this sounds like a lot, check out the new Rockshox Trailhead web app. I'm not sensitive or tuned in enough to know which of the features between my current and old Fox setup is making the most difference, since obviously there are many differences between the two, but I'd be hard-pressed to go "back" to forks or shock without HBO. Nice. Future US, Inc. Full 7th Floor, 130 West 42nd Street, If your shock is HBO-equipped there's no more just swapping in and out grey travel spacers to change stroke. Thats because (like the forks) the LSC makes no discernible difference to sensitivity from a pedaling/small bump POV and youll be clicking that blue dial back and forth wondering if its broken at first. The only potential issue is that the bigger, re-positioned LSC dial can be a tight fit with fatter pump heads, though I managed to get every type I tried threaded on. I can only imagine that HBO will change a lot of aggressive riders' setups and I wonder how it will affect base compression tunes as well. For folks that are feeling a little bit overwhelmed by how many products RockShox has completely overhauled this year, I'm with you. (2) The outgoing DebonAir C1 air spring didnt have the best midstroke support, especially in the ZEB. Both the high and low-speed compression dials have 5 clicks of compression, with the idea being that you have two clicks to increase damping, and two clicks to decrease damping from that base tune. Then tweak both the positive and negative air spring volumes with Bottomless Tokens.
First of all, this requires the manufacturer to do a proper job testing suspension settings and working with RockShox to come up with their best base setup. RockShox has also overhauled their rear shock lineup to go with the new forks, with new versions of the Deluxe and Super Deluxe, in both air and coil configurations. As with the MY23 suspension forks, RockShox has introduced a significant amount of specificity to the new shocks along with HBO. Tags: I now have HBO front (Mezzer Pro) and rear (EXT Storia), and this setup is many miles ahead of my last (2019 Fox 36 GRIP2 Factory, 2019 DHX2 Factory), I'd be very hard-pressed to decide whether it is more important in the front and rear. The 38mm-stanchioned ZEB chassis gets a more minor overhaul than the Pike and Lyrik, but it still adds the same bells and whistles, including the pressure-relief valves, hub end-cap adapters, and the Ultimate Bushing Package (ZEB Ultimate only). So while I'm very excited about seeing hydraulic bottom out at min-maxable price points, both for OE spec and after market replacement, I can't comment on how SRAM's system performs relative to other HBO-equipped shocks on the market that I've played with. Four-position high speed compression damping adjustment is then done with a 3mm Allen bolt. The new approach to low speed compression might not suit everyone though. RockShox has also made the process of reshimming a bit easier with this damper, allowing shops like us that do in depth suspension work to have an easier time sourcing shim stacks and retuning shocks. Whats going on with a fork is much more consistent (1:1 ratio for every bike/rider) so theyre confident that they can design the air system + tokens to manage bottom out up front. At any rate, I'm not here to argue about whether your next bike should have a Trunnion mount or not - mine certainly won't - but if you're curious about the subject I don't think anyone has done a better job of covering it than Steve-from-Vorsprung's 'Durability, and how to prevent it'. Photo: Andrew Major, Here's the HBO assembly including the valve and shims. At that point (stick or otherwise) a Charger 3 / Coil Boxxer becomes a possibility. Despite the next level feel its still significantly cheaper and lighter than Foxs Float X and Float X2 shocks too, making it a boutique vibe damper at a relative bargain price and trail-friendly weight. I think adjust-ability has a limit for a lot of riders, and feeling the change with each click would be more productive to many, in my opinion. For that application, unless theyre releasing progressive springs, I could very much see a HBO system added. Seems to me it's important in both, so when using the word "ultimate" to describe your products, you can't credibly really debate if it's *less* important. The new lowers also get optional bolt-on adapters at the dropouts, which take up the extra space that Torque Cap axle flanges would, to make axle alignment easier if youre using a wheel without Torque Caps. One of the universal themes for MY23 is that suspension companies are quietly tired of covering shock warranties caused by their customers' crappy standards. Especially as the lock out lever is hard to operate and hard in terms of its effect too. Super Deluxe Coil, I dont have an answer for that. The idea was to simplify tuning, by having a consistent and repeatable baseline thats actually a middle-of-the-road, viable setting for a lot of riders (instead of fully closed compression damping, which few folks would actually run in practice). Like the Pike, the Lyrik gets a new 35mm-stanchioned chassis, which is claimed to cut a tiny bit of weight and add a little bit of stiffness over the outgoing model.
A secondary goal was to make the damper quiet slurping noises on rebound are pretty common in a lot of forks and shocks, and RockShox made a point of eliminating those to keep the bike quiet and avoid distractions to the rider. (3) The prior-generation Super Deluxe shocks worked very well but werent the most fully featured. This is to keep crap from getting ingested into the shock and also to support the shaft through any loads as it telescopes. The Super Deluxe is RockShoxs line of external-reservoir shocks for longer-travel Trail through DH bikes, and the new versions get a new damper with a lot of the same features as the Charger 3 one in the new fork lineup. For those trying to decide what to buy based on current units, the Progressive system is very similar to the current MegNeg cans and SRAM describes it as "more playful and dynamic" than the Linear version. RockShox sells the Super Deluxe shocks with a wide range of manufacturer-specific tuning options along with the generic aftermarket version of the shock. Bike Perfect is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Choose from two different air cans, with a larger Progressive air can to add more playfulness to a bike with linear leverage rates, and a Linear air can to maintain a more linear spring rate on progressive bikes, helping you use all the travel. While the new air cans are not backward compatible with prior Deluxe/Super Deluxe air shocks, the coil springs used here are the same as before, with all of the previous color, size, and weight options. Between the reoriented seal head (purple) and a relocated dimple for balancing the positive and negative spring, the Super Deluxe air shocks are fresh and going forward for MY23. That does make sense though, if the fork designs are intended for more specific use cases the damper and airspring can be appropriately designed without a lot of adjustment. The word back from RockShox is that the stock range will work for everyone. Okay, RockShox doesn't say anything in their marketing material about bike companies with bullsh*t QC/QA in general or the additional issues that stem from yoke or Trunnion shock mounting systems.
What SRAM is introducing here functions in the same way. The rider would then tune the exact bottom out characteristics of their shock by adding and removing air tokens, as with most air shocks on the market. FREE USA Shipping Over $49 + FREE 60-Day Returns .
Excellent write up but I do have one question that mayor may not be answerable at the moment. The Deluxe air shocks also get a new spring, also called DebonAir+, which features options for two different air cans (one more progressive, the other more linear), plus options for volume spacers in both the positive and negative chambers to fine-tune the spring curve. That would have been a great question re. My plan for a future follow up piece is to check out what brands are releasing bikes with Super Deluxe shocks without HBO and to follow up on why they made that decision. Apart from what I've already covered the most important thing to note with the Super Deluxe air shocks is that they use entirely new volume spacers which are not backwards compatible. As part of its new 2023 suspension line up, RockShox has completely overhauled its rear shock models both inside and out, as well as adding new models.
We dont have much info on the Rush RC yet, but have reached out to RockShox and will update this post when we learn more. RockShox calls that phenomenon cross talk, and says that theyve reduced it to the point where the amount of damping at 300 inches per second of shaft speed (squarely in the high-speed range) only varies by 5% across the entire range of the low-speed compression adjuster. choosing a selection results in a full page refresh. From a performance perspective, I can't think of any reason a rider wouldn't want to have the HBO system on their shock, but bike companies can still buy non-HBO versions of these shocks at OE, so if you're buying a bike with a MY23 RockShox Super Deluxe and this matters to you, you'll want to confirm the spec up front. For the coil shocks we add the 5 clicks of adjustable hydraulic bottom out. Coil-like plush with air adjustability, awesome all-round control and next level tuneability at a great price. Now you'll just have massive glide ring/damper body wear. *Great piece (as usual) by the way, love all the tear down pics. Well see, but if Im FRS Ill be touting a longer (5mm), bright pink, version called Fox Gloves in the Factory forks next year. I've seen some incredible shock wear, within a year of use, on Trunnion bikes and in particular when they have seized Trunnion bearings. Use left/right arrows to navigate the slideshow or swipe left/right if using a mobile device, A fully redesigned Super Deluxe Ultimate and Super Deluxe Ultimate Coil, DebonAir+ Air can in linear or progressive. Visit our corporate site (opens in new tab). Copyright 2022 Bikerumor, All Rights Reserved. The new MY23 Deluxe and Super Deluxe rear shocks get similar updates to the new MY23 Pike, Lyrik and ZEB forks, with coil and air versions with new air volume options, to keep everything moving in sync. Hydraulic bottom out systems are becoming increasingly common at the premium end of rear shocks. We have loved it for its reasonable price, ease of setup, wide range of fitment options, and reliable performance. Dial in more HBO damping for more bottom-out resistance as needed. There is a lot to talk about with the new 2023 RockShox Super Deluxe rear shocks, but I want to begin with the feature that I think will make the biggest difference for the most riders - an adjustable hydraulic bottom out (HBO) system. Feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call! It's probably important to note that adding hydraulic bottom out doesn't change spring rate, it's ramping up the compression damping significantly in the last 20% of the stroke, but for some riders on some bicycles it will let them think about optimizing traction and support separately from how their bike performs when dropping to flat.
